Daft Punk: Robotic Marketing at its finest

10:19 AM

As you know by now, I am a huge fan of Daft Punk’s music, style and the incredible storyline that they tell through their marketing. With their newest album “Random Access Memories”coming out at the end of May, the duo is now starting to get more visible again. It seems like every week there is another little hint, video, snippet or photo popping up somewhere on the Internet and people start going crazy for it!

I am sure that there is more to come in the following weeks, but here is a little roundup on some of the excellent marketing activities from Daft Punk over the last 2 months.

First Teaser Video during SNL:
Everyone got a first glimpse at the album’s first release “Get Lucky” when the robots aired a little advertisement during Saturday Night Life. The song that gets stuck in your head right away and shows that they are definitely going for a very funky disco sound on the album. Let’s hope that they will appear in a SNL skit when the album comes out, I can only imagine the possibilities for them to take part in the show!

Second Teaser Video at Coachella:

During this weekend’s Coachella festival, the duo has launched a little clip which was playing on the big festival screens in between performances. It starts off with the “Get Lucky” version that we already know from the SNL clip but quickly switches up into a different version that features Pharrell Williams vocals. This feature already had me going crazy and the song is amazing. The video actually shows Skateboard P, Daft Punk and legendary guitar player Nile Rodgers playing the song. At the end of the video, we get to know who else collaborated on the album: Animal Collective's Panda Bear, the Strokes' Julian Casablancas, DJ Falcon, Chilly Gonzales, Paul Williams, Giorgio Moroder, and Todd Edwards. What a line-up!

Vice magazine series: The Creators Project: Random Access Memories

So far, this web-series is definitely the standout from the album’s marketing efforts, as it presents some of the aforementioned collaborators talking about their involvement in this project. The fact that musical legends such as Nile Rodgers or Giorgio Moroder pay tribute to Daft Punk and even praise their work as being inspirational shows the impact that the duo has on our music culture. I mean even Pharrell says he would fly over to Paris just to play the Tambourine on one of their songs! If we can trust the interviews, the duo aims for revamping the long-gone disco-era with a modern electronic twist.

Hedi Slimane shoots Daft Punk for Saint Laurent:

Aside from their excellent music, one of the main reasons for Daft Punk’s success was definitely their on-point styling. The mixture of robot hat and hands with badass leather-jackets has always given them an edgy yet clean look. Therefore it’s no surprise that they have taken Hedi Slimane on board to give their outfits a modern touch. Slimane is known for his rockstar aesthetics and has just launched the Saint Laurent Music Project which portrays artists such as Marilyn Manson or Courtney Love. The outfits were also extended to Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers in the Coachella clip.
