Nicola Formichetti announced as Diesel’s First Artistic Director

9:20 AM

This week, Thierry Mugler announced the departure of Nicola Formichetti, the stylist-turned-Creative director. Shortly after, Diesel's mastermind Renzo Rosso presented the designer as the first ever creative director for the Diesel brand. He will be responsible  product, marketing, and communication divisions of both Diesel and its Black & Gold line starting with his first collection for Fall/Winter 2014.

Formichetti became famous for being Lady Gaga's stylist and therefore having a great impact on her infamous looks and recent pop culture in general. His time at a Thierry Mugler certainly paved the way for other designers such as Humberto Leon and Carol Lim at Kenzo. But I think that Nicola could not really keep the attention that the brand was getting when he started. The hype was big when he took over and some of his moves like using "Zombie Boy" as the main model were pretty cool but short-lived.

I can only speak for myself, but I have lost interest in the brand quite fast after the mixture of Zombie Boy and Lady Gaga appeareance seemed a little repetitive.

Same goes for the Diesel brand that I loved for their "Be Stupid" campaign but otherwise have not really considered for buying or paying a lot of attention too.

Nevertheless, I think that the partnering is quite interesting. Formichetti certainly needs to take a little different apporach than he did at Mugler and Diesel could certainly profit from edgier designs. Only time will tell, but maybe Renzo Rosso will prove us right again with this odd business move!
