MOLIMU wanted: Nike SB x Supreme NYC Blazers
12:20 PM
When it comes to sneakers, “Supreme NYC” has always provided extremely high quality designs that sold-out in minutes. They have worked with pretty much every big label from “Clarks” to “Vans” but yet again it’s their “Nike” collaborations that I adore the most.
The
standout release from the ongoing catalogue of “Nike” x “Supreme NYC” shoes is
certainly the their rendition of the Blazer silhouette. The choice of classic
colorways Varsity Red, Sail and Black mixed with the use of excentric materials
such as snakeskin or quilted leather make this one of my favorite sneakers of
all time!
The Blazer is one of the iconic Nike silhouettes and was released back in 1972 as the first Basketball sneaker that sported the Swoosh. It became one of the first sport shoes that was able to transfer its on-court style to the streets and became a fashion staple early on. Supreme has always kept a strong relation to NYC street culture and has embraced the skater scene as well as music and basketball culture which is rooted so deeply in the different borroughs of New York. Therefore it’s no surprise that the label chose this sneaker for one of their first collaborations with the Nike brand.

When the
shoe came out on April 21st in 2006, there were campouts and queues
around the block at Supreme at a time when the reseller hype wasn’t as big as
it is today. The crazyness surrounding this sneaker release was pretty much
unheard of and set the tone for many other Supreme collaborations.
The design
was supposed to resemble typical characteristics of the Bling Bling era in Hip
Hop back in the 80’s with artists such as Slick Rick. They definitely succeeded
at showing off some of the classic looks from that era with their use of
materials and colors. The first thing that pops out when you look at the shoe
is the python snakeskin Swoosh which is certainly an uncommon material for
sneakers but certainly a favorite amongst rappers. The majority of the shoe is
constructed of quilted leather which is reminiscent of urban fashion such as Varsity
Jackets as well as high-fashion choices like the legendary handbag designs by
Coco Chanel. What took it over the top was the little canvas stripe on the heel
which sported the typical Gucci Red and Green colors and had a golden D-Ring.
The combination of all these features, materials and colors just gave this
sneaker an incredible high-fashion look that inspired many of today’s releases.
Nowadays,
it’s pretty hard to get your hands on one of the colorways as they go for
around 1000$ on ebay or at consignment stores. Hence, I doubt that I will hold
one of these babies in my hands any time soon, but they are definitely one of
my holy grails when it comes to sneakers.
