The new Men in RnB

7:38 PM

When male RnB music got popular in the 90's with artists like R.Kelly, Ray J or Boyz 2 Men most of the songs were about making sweet love to your lady and most singers looked like they tried to justify their high voices by wearing goldchains and getting tattooes all over their body. After some time most of these artists dissappeared or got into sex-tape scandals, which showed that their one dimensional music wasn't really enough to succeed in today's music industry. But just recently I've seen an increasing number of new RnB-artists making noise in the blogosphere and since some of them have quite the potential, I think it's only right to post some of their music. Most of them have various musical influences and this versatility could be key to long-term success.

Drake
First off, I want to start with Drake who is probably the most famous singer in this list and who doesn't really count as a true RnB- singer anyways, but I think that his success shows some of the most interesting aspects of the new shift in RnB-music. Especially his mixtape "So far gone" underlines some of the musical influences that have made his music unique and interesting. By sampling Peter,Bjorn and John, Lykke Li, Tears for Fears and Coldplay his in-house producer and best friend Noah "40" Shebib is the key character in his musical development. His dreamy and catchy production in connection with his mixture of rapping and singing have given Drake the opportunity to stand out and establish a serious following. Right now everything looks like he might be up there with names like Jay-Z, Kanye West and his label mate Lil Wayne in a few years.

I just recently stumbled upon this guy's free mixtape "Nostalgia, Ultra" (get it here!) and have been listening to it non-stop since then. His smooth vocals turn every single song into a sureshot and his version of MGMT's "Electric Feel" sounds nearly better than the original! I have no idea how he fits in the omnipresent Odd future collective, but his music is pure goodness. He is also featured on the new Tyler the Creator single "She" which is by far the best song on Tyler's new album if you ask me. It is also rumored that he is working on the new Kanye West & Jay-Z album "Watch the Throne".

Jai Paul
I don't really know anything about this guy except that he is from London and that he basically has released only one song that got the internet going crazy and has already been sampled by Drake for his song "Dreams money can buy" which you can listen to above. Other than that I have read that based on this record he has made BBC Radio 1′s ones to watch for 2011 list and i said to be the next big thing.

The Weeknd
Up next is another canadian artist who has just released his debut record "House of Balloons" which has gained a lot of praise ifrom the internet and other artists like Drake. His music is filled with sexual topics or drug references and express so much pain that listening to the record in a whole can be pretty damn exhausting.
